Q&A of EPS

Influence of water quality on the production process of flame retardant EPS particles

The one-step process of flame-retardant EPS particles is to add styrene monomer, initiator, dispersant, water, foaming agent and other auxiliaries into the reactor successively. After polymerization, the resin particles containing foaming agent are obtained. After washing, centrifugation and drying, the expandable polystyrene beads are prepared.

The hardness of water is too high, which affects the electrical insulation performance and thermal stability of the product. The chloride ion in water is too high, which is easy to form peroxyradicals by the addition of oxygen energy and free radicals. However, peroxyradicals can terminate the double radicals and copolymerize with monomers. The molecular weight of copolymers is very low, so oxygen also has the function of polymerization inhibition. During polymerization, the air in the polymerization system is discharged with nitrogen.
