Q&A of EPS

What is the principle of flame retardant polystyrene

The mechanism of flame retardant is that the strong dehydrating agent of polyphosphoric acid is formed by dehydration, which makes the surface of organic matter dehydrate to form carbide. In addition, the oxide and polyphosphoric acid are formed to cover the surface of the substrate and isolate the air, so as to achieve the purpose of flame retardant.

Compared with the mechanism of halogen-containing flame retardants, the mechanism of flame retardancy occurs in the solidification phase. Ammonium polyphosphate is completely degraded by endothermic reaction at 275 ℃, releasing polyphosphoric acid and amine gas, which are used as carbon forming agent and gas source respectively. Some polymers, such as polyolefins, do not contain any oxygen or hydroxyl (OH) functional groups on the molecular chain, so it is impossible to dehydrate, so it is necessary to add polyhydroxy compounds. Especially for polyolefin flame retardant, app based intumescent flame retardant system must contain polyhydroxy compounds. Due to the existence of polyhydroxy compounds, the dehydration reaction of polyphosphate can take place, the carbon layer is established, and the amine gas released at the same time is used as the gas source to form the insulation layer.
